I was very young when I first learned the power of a broken heart.
Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, it was not my own heart that taught me this truth. My heart, after all, was already broken.
And that’s why I’m here, I thought wryly, glancing up from the all- too-familiar patient room floor at Apollo City Hospital.
Between the tarnished sense of sterility, its ash-colored tiles, and the dulled-white walls, I almost felt at home. In the last six years, I’d come here at least once every couple of months. Between all my visits, I had counted the cabinets along the wall countless times, even if I always forgot how many there actually were in the end.
That wasn’t the only thing I’d forgotten, either. I frowned at the sudden, overwhelming scent of iodine.
How long have I been sitting here, to have forgotten that?
I hated that smell. It wasn’t just unpleasant in itself; it also brought up a wide array of unpleasant memories.
“What is it, Raiya?”
Despite my discomfort, a small, reassuring smile was already on my lips as I looked over at my grandfather. Through the loose tresses of my coppery hair, I saw him watching me with a concerned look on his face.
My grandpa was a thin man, with a bushy, white beard and kind, ageless eyes. Every day since I’d finished elementary school, it seemed as though he was getting shorter as I was getting taller. As I gazed at him, taking in his plain clothes and his oversized coat, I thought how easy it would be for the average person to dismiss him, to see him as harmless and old, barely indistinguishable from any man walking in the street.
Grandpa would never be that to me. No—to me, he was my hero.

Thank you to the publishers for providing an ARC of this book through NetGalley.I DNFed this book at 39%.I loved the world building in this book, but that was about it. The characters were annoying, the plot was hard to follow and the powers of the main character didnt really make sense. The part that I read mainly focused on Raiya sending a boy into a coma, which was explained but didnt make much sense. I think the main issue is that the main character, Raiya, is not likeable, at least in thisI have never read the Starlight Chronicles so I was new to this whole series when I started reading this book. But my friend recommended it to me. I have to say I am not disappointed in the least. The story was written very well and I found no fault with the plot. I felt like I could really feel what Raiya was going through. Her struggle as she feared her own powers. This definitely got me to go and but the rest of the whole Starlight Chronicles. I think Searching is a great prequel that

Searching, a prequel companion to CS Johnsons Starlight Chronicles Series, introduces readers to the beloved character, Astraiya aka Raiya in an origin story of sorts from her time here on Earth as a fall Star, trying to navigate the social graces of Rosemont Academy. Wow, nice prequel. A couple notes. At the very first, the author warns of spoilers in the book. The spoilers at the beginning are not that bad and you might have already guessed. The big spoiler comes at the end, in the epilogue. You can read the whole book with no problem, but if you don't want to know the future, 15-20 years, then don't read the epilogue. You don't miss anything, if you skip the epilogue. It is a great story, but remember, the first half is about a 13 year old girl, building
