I don't know what my issue was here, but reading this felt like a plodding chore. Fowles' prose is still a delight, but I don't know if his storytelling works for me in the short fiction mode. The title story was sort of a light Magus, in fitting with his "variations" theme for the collection, but it doesn't reach the scope of the longer novel, despite threading in a wonderful sense of dread.
