Vampires are the newest big thing these days, thanks to Twilight. It is a horrible literary tragedy that Twilight could overshadow the Darkangel Trilogy. Nowhere in this world can Twilight begin to compare. I'll say here what I say to everyone who gets teary-eyed over Twilight: the Darkangel Trilogy will astound you. It blows Twilight away. While not about a traditional vampire, the story centers around a very similar but far more engaging creature. The world that Pierce has created isA beautiful, slightly surreal, haunting young adult fantasy that is perfect for adults as well. A close reading of the first book, The Darkangel, will give you hints that this is really sci-fi disguised as fantasy, hints which are repeated more emphatically later on. The astute reader will also find hints of "The Arabian Nights" and "The Ugly Duckling" and maybe even "Beauty and the Beast" in The Darkangel as well, but although the story has that anything-can-happen feel found in fairy tales, it
I first read these years ago as a teenager. For a year or two, I was constantly checking the books out of the library and rereading them. Then I sort of forgot them, I suppose. If the end had been better, I probably would've given it four stars. As is, I almost think it's only worth 2 stars because of the ending. I give it 3 stars because I thought it was enjoyable up until the end. The story is interesting and different. At times it becomes a little slow as Ariel crosses another desert or is locked in a tower, but in general I thought the plot flowed nicely and kept my interest. At the end of the third book, I wasn't sure if it was ending or if the author is opening

I soooo enjoyed the strong female characters in this trilogy. Strong, but not invincible. Not perfect. But also, not weak in a "damsel-in-distress" kind of way. They are beset by human weakness (for example, the desire to love and to be loved), but we see how this informs their choices and actions rather than wallowing in the weakness itself. They learn.
